We're getting a plea for help tonight from the Mother's Milk Bank at UMC. You may remember a story we aired earlier this year. That bank was launched at UMC to provide the first 24 hour donor site in Lubbock. This is a bank whose donors can only be new moms, and want to share with other babies in need.
Valeri Gatlin, Lactation Consultant, said, "Human milk for human babies, especially in the NICU for compromised infants; it's like gold!"
Dr. Craig Uhl, Pediatrician, said, "Every manufacturer on the planet has tried to recreate breast feeding. There's nothing better than a mother's milk. It's got immunoglobulins that will protect the baby's system when it first enters the world. We recommend all moms to at least try it once."
Tonight, there's an SOS from our local milk bank because all the mothers, who launched this program have graduated. This means their babies are now a year old, and breast milk is not donated after that milestone; therefore, the need is especially great right now.
As always, some moms can't get their milk as soon as the baby needs it, and our local milk bank is almost dry. If you'd like to donate breast milk, you can call the milk bank office at UMC. That number is 775-8864.
To become a donor, moms just have to call Mothers' Milk Bank of North Texas toll free at 1-866-810-0071 and begin the screening process at no cost to them. Their website address is www.texasmilkbank.org
