The man who wants to open up a strip club here lives in Corpus Christi. His brother Bobby Cannon lives here. And if that name rings a bell, he ran for Lubbock mayor in 1990. And he's been convicted of sex crimes three times.
Who would run a strip club that may open up in South Lubbock county? NewsChannel 11 called the number on the application given by Lawrence Cannon to find out. "This number has been disconnected," said the recorded operator.
Cannon's the Corpus Christi man wanting to open a strip club East of the Tahoka highway. However, we were successful locating his brother, Bobby Cannon. He lives in Lubbock. We asked him if he's planning to run the strip club. He wouldn't confirm or deny the question.
NewsChannel 11 was able to track down Bobby Cannon's conviction list. He's been convicted three times in Lubbock county for promotion of prostitution. Once in 1991 and twice in 1994. And under county law, Bobby Cannon isn't eligible to own or operate a sexually oriented business.
"So someone who's been convicted of multiple misdemeanors or a felony, is prohibited from having a sexually oriented business for five years," said John Grace, Assistant Lubbock Criminal District Attorney.
According to county documents, Cannon completed probation in December of 2001. Under the county's ordinance, Cannon can't own or operate a sexually oriented business until 2006.
Lawrence Cannon is listed as the manager on the strip club application. Bobby Cannon's name is no where on the application.
Right now, Cannon's application is under appeal. We'll know next month if the strip club will even be built.
