Food for Thought Report 1.8

City inspectors stepped into the kitchens of more than 40 local and county kitchens to see if any health and safety violations might be lurking there. This time the list includes a new bagel shop with a familiar name and a Depot District hot spot.

There are five restaurants in our report this week. The two Low Performers have a combined 10 critical violations, but let's begin with the Top Performers. They are three places offering everything from whoppers to bagels to bar-b-q. Here's another installment of NewsChannel 11's Food for Thought.

We start with a score fit for a king. Burger King at 3525 19th Street earns a perfect score this time making them a Food for Thought Top Performer.

What a hoot! Hoot's Bagels at 2409 Broadway is next. The second location of this local spot offers the same menu as the Kingsgate location, and they're also on the Top Performing list with zero critical violations.

J&M Bar-B-Q at 3605 34th Street rounds out the Top Performing list, also with zero critical violations.

The first of our two Low Performers is Hub City Brewery at 1807 Buddy Holly Avenue with four critical violations.

  • Cold foods were being held at improper temperatures, pepperoni, sausage and hamburger were being held at 48 degrees. Cold food must be kept at a minimum of 41 degrees. The food was discarded.

  • Hand washing facilities were not adequate and accessible. A sink was backing up and was slow draining.
  • Towels were missing from a sink. All hand washing facilities must have soap and towels.

The Manager at Hub City told me all violations have been corrected.
