Tech Honors Women Athletes from 50 Years Ago

The Texas Tech Athletic Department honored a very special group of women athletes Saturday.

Tech celebrated the anniversary of the women's fencing team by honoring those who fought for their school 50 years ago. Five women were members of the first traveling team to represent Texas Tech in any sport.

They include: Zoe Merriman, Wanda Linam, Jimmie Bennett, Virginia Still, and Iva Sue Crowley. The team was led by Coach Jack Carnell.

The women say they feel very honored to be recognized by Texas Tech.

"We were all just blown away, but we were excited and grateful, humble, and very pleased to have this recognition," says Zoe Merriman.

The team disbanded after being together only one year. That was when Coach Carnell was invited to New York to try out for the 1956 United States Olympic Fencing Squad.
