Convergys bringing 600 jobs to Lubbock

A worldwide customer management corporation is adding around 600 jobs to their Lubbock operations.

Convergys Corporation made the announcement earlier this week. Local labor experts say the positions could have a significant effect on Lubbock's unemployment rate.

"It's 600 full-time positions, mostly customer service, also tech support for a client in the cable and satellite industry," Amy Williams with Convergys Corporations said.

Workforce Solutions of the South Plains Director Martin Aguirre says more than 9,000 people in Lubbock are out of work. H says adding the jobs could be a big boost.

"It could be as much as a half a point drop in the unemployment rate," Aguirre said.

According to Aguirre, adding one new job will trickle down to benefit about six people. 600 jobs could benefit thousands in the Hub City.

"That money gets spent. When we get paid we go out and spend that money in our community to support our lifestyle," Aguirre said.

Lubbock has added 2,000 jobs since 2010, Aguirre said.

"It takes 600 workers off the civilian labor force into employed status," Aguirre said.

Williams says their jobs are for a wide-range of applicants.

"It's for anyone who wants to get a career going in the customer service industry," Williams said.

Williams says the employees will help their clients with customer service and technical support. They're looking for people with good communication and computer skills, and Aguirre says the competition could be tough.

"To get 600 people, they could be easily looking at 2,500 applicants," Aguirre said.

The jobs are full-time and come with benefits. Convergys says they're looking for people with a customer service background, strong personal skills, keyboarding skills, and a flexible schedule.

Job seekers can apply online at Convergys will also hold a job fair on their site on Saturday, Nov. 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They're located at 3701 West Loop 289.
