A natural sweetener used in gum and mints may help prevent ear infections in children! Xylitol, also known as birch sugar, has been shown to have antibacterial properties in lab tests. Researchers at the University of Toronto wanted to test its effects on ear infections. They found that healthy young children, who chewed gum with xylitol in it, had nearly a third fewer ear infections than kids who chewed gum with a different sweetener.
