Tips for a Non-Stressful New Year

If the promises you've made to yourself this new year are starting to feel overwhelming, you may be setting yourself up for another problem...stress. And that's something that can take its toll on your health.

So, here are some tips from the University of Michigan to help reduce the stress in your life:

  • Make sure you have at least one person you can talk to about stressful situations.
  • Even if you aren't feeling overwhelmed, take at least 15 minutes every day to step out of your house or office and get a change of scenery.
  • Narrow your list of new year's resolutions to just one thing you want to change.
  • Same thing for all those projects on your list...tackle one at a time.
  • And don't forget to make time for exercise, but keep that simple too so you'll be more likely to stick to it.

"We know that exercise is beneficial so do this. It's important to take any moments that you can sit down with yourself, relax, get away from your stress and just use the techniques that are appropriate for you," says counselor Michael Moriarty.

Mental health experts say remember that the new year is a good time to make small lifestyle changes, but not drastic overhauls that will leave you frustrated and ready to quit.
