Estacado High School junior Quinton Smith died unexpectedly on Saturday, Nov. 19 while in Dallas for a national chess tournament.
Smith was a member of the chess team, tennis team, Mock Trial, Law Skills USA and active in other school activities. A very involved participant in Estacado High School choir and drama activities, Smith had just completed a major role in the recent EHS musical production, "Seussical Jr."
Lucio Trevino was Quinton Smith's mock trial coach for two years.
"Quinton Smith didn't have a single enemy, Trevino said. "Everybody loved him. The kid was going to go far."
"When he was a freshman, my upperclassmen came to me and asked me to put him on the mock trial team," Trevino said. "That is pretty unusual for the upperclassmen to want a freshman on the team, but that's how special he was. He was an exceptional guy and had a positive impact on everyone. I could brag all day on him."
Additional support by the LISD counseling staff has been available for students on the Estacado campus today.
Smith is survived by his mother Brenda Zapata. Funeral plans are pending. Donations are being accepted at any PlainsCapital Bank location for the Quinton Smith Memorial Fund to help the family with burial expenses.
