The Christmas shopping season is in full swing and if you're like me you're not close to being finished. So the next time you're out and about, looking for something to wear, picking a gift, or stopping for a meal, think local.
By supporting locally-owned businesses you can "pay it forward," keeping money in the local economy and keeping local business owners in business.
Recent studies across the country show that, for every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $45 stays in the local economy, creating jobs and expanding the city's tax base. And that's more bang for your buck than buying from a national chain or franchise.
While calling an 800 number or shopping online may provide some instant gratification, in the long run it may cost our community more than you bargained for. In addition, local business owners and employees typically have a high level of expertise and a passion for the products they sell. They tend to have a greater interest in getting to know their customers, who are, after all, also their neighbors and friends. But local businesses cannot survive without the support of local customers. So if you need some local gift ideas…
Most everyone gets their haircut, washes their car, mows their lawn, eats out and shops at gift stores. So how about a gift certificate from a local business owner.
The more we can think and buy local here in West Texas, the better our economy can withstand the hardships plaguing other parts of the country.
Remember, pay it forward as often as you can… Buy local. Eat local. Be local.
