The Lubbock District Attorney charged Michael Fralin, 23, with felony animal cruelty Friday for a September 2 incident during which police say the Lubbock man shot his pit bull terrier in the head with a shotgun.
Responding officers say they found Fralin next to his dead dog in his own bedroom. The man was "covered from head to toe in blood," police say, and he was holding a knife. When officers repeatedly told him to drop the knife, police say Fralin responded, "What are you going to do, shoot me?"
Eventually Fralin put down the knife and was taken into custody, police say. No reason was given for the dog's shooting.
