I was appalled when I heard news of the married couple that are under investigation for bilking the Lubbock School District out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
In case you haven't heard, this man and wife, who have yet to be named, worked for the company that handles maintenance for the school district. They are accused of buying thousands of dollars worth of equipment on behalf of the schools and turning around, selling it on eBay and keeping all the money. There are still lots of questions to be answered here, and until we know more, I'll reserve my opinions about how this went unnoticed for more than seven years.
For now, let's talk about the crime itself and what should happen next.
If this couple did the crime, and remember the superintendent said they confessed, they should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. If that means jail time, so be it.
What happened here is one of the worst kinds of thefts. They are accused of not only stealing from an individual or company, but from every tax paying citizen in Lubbock. And remember, the school district takes more money from our paychecks than any other local taxing entity. We trust that money will be spent to provide the best education for our children. not to line the pockets of a few dishonest individuals. I am glad school officials got the money back and will work to ensure this kind of thing never happens again. That is their job as elected officials. They are, at best, to spend our money wisely, and, at the very least, protect it from criminals.
This isn't the end of this story, you'll hear more. and I hope the next update comes with charges and indictments.
