Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees member Chris Comer, representing District 3, announced his resignation at the board's meeting Thursday. His resignation is effective on Friday, December 16. Comer will be moving to Midland to assume duties as the senior vice-president of lending and business development for Commercial State Bank.

In May of 2006, Comer was elected to represent District 3 on the Board of Trustees and was re-elected to that position last year. He is married to Stacy Comer, a veteran teacher of 23 years at Preston Smith Elementary. She will finish the school year teaching at Smith Elementary, where their two children, Kennedi and Jackson, also attend.

In prepared remarks at the meeting, Comer said, "I treated the parents and taxpayers of LISD as my bosses, and I am proud to have represented them on the board." He added, "I love LISD and the opportunity to serve it meant the world to me."

Board President James Arnold said of Comer's resignation, "We'll miss Chris on the Board of Trustees. He's been a very thoughtful and deliberate trustee and he brings many years of experience to the table. Stacy Comer has been an outstanding faculty member and contributor to the district in her 23 years with LISD. Chris is a friend, and on a personal level, I wish Stacy and him the best as they move to Midland."

"I am sad that we are losing Chris Comer as a member of this outstanding board. He was a great trustee who asked good questions and was most interested in meeting the needs of our students," said LISD Superintendent Karen Garza, Ph.D. She added, "We are glad Stacy will be finishing the year teaching at Preston Smith. She is a great teacher and campus leader. Her shoes will also be hard to fill. We'll miss the entire Comer family."

On Monday, December 19, the board will begin accepting letters of interest, including a resume, to fill the vacancy in District 3. Due to the closure of LISD Central Office during the holidays, all letters of interest should include a resume and be mailed to James Arnold, LISD Board President, c/o Lubbock National Bank, P.O. Box 6100, Lubbock, TX 79493. Letters must be postmarked by January 6 to be considered. The Board of Trustees will select a successor to fill the vacancy until a special election in May of 2012, when voters will select someone to fill the position until May of 2014.
