Winter Weather Advisory issued for parts of South Plains

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 3 pm this afternoon to 6 am tomorrow for Parmer and Castro counties, and includes the towns of Friona, Bovina, Dimmitt and Hart.

  • Snow accumulations of three to five inches possible, with deeper drifts.
  • Rain this morning will mix with and change to snow around midday or early afternoon near the New Mexico state line, with the changeover line expanding south and east through the afternoon and evening hours. Snowfall will begin tapering off late tonight.
  • While initially roads will be wet, much colder air combined with moderate to occasionally heavy snow will result in roads becoming icy and snow packed. Strong northerly winds will create blowing snow and poor visibilities. Hazardous driving conditions may result.

This Winter Storm Warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected or are occurring. Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an emergency. If you must travel keep an extra flashlight, clothing, food, and water in your vehicle.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 3 pm this afternoon to 6 am tomorrow for Swisher, Briscoe, Bailey, Lamb, Hale, Hall, Floyd and Cochran counties, and includes the towns Memphis, Turkey, Floydada, Lockney, Morton, Tulia, Silverton, Quitaque, Muleshoe, Littlefield, Olton and Plainview.Snow accumulations of one to three inches are possible, with deeper drifts.

  • Rain early today will mix with and change to snow around early afternoon near the New Mexico state line, with the changeover line expanding south and east through the afternoon and evening hours. Snowfall will begin tapering off late tonight.
  • While initially roads will be wet, much colder air combined with moderate snow will result in roads becoming icy and snow packed. Strong northerly winds will create blowing snow and poor visibilities. Hazardous driving conditions may result.

This Winter Weather Advisory indicates periods of snow will cause, primarily, travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities. Use caution while driving.

No weather advisories are in effect for Lubbock or points south and east at this time.
