Slaton hires new baseball coach

(SLATON, TX - KCBD) -

The Slaton baseball team has a new coach. Brandon Newman, a former standout pitcher at Lubbock Christian University, was introduced to the Tigers as the new whistle.

"I started out here at LCU and graduated in 2005," said an excited Newman. "It was just a great experience. This university has given me so much to go by...the baseball program as well as the Christian values instilled in me."

However, with a Slaton team returning most of its key players from last year's playoff team, the new coach plans to let the Tigers do what they do best.

"Coming into a program as good as what we've got now is pretty easy for me, I just sit back and let the kids do the work. We have a lot of good athletes already in place who have experience, not only in the district but in the playoffs, so hopefully I can add just a little bit of knowledge and the experience I have and let them run with it."

Randy Gattis resigned from the post earlier this year after taking Slaton to the postseason.
