LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Lubbock police say they are investigating one of the strangest theft cases in recent memory.

Police say Javier Rodriguez, 22, broke into Christaki's Burgers at 1111 34th Street Tuesday night.

He used a knife to cut a phone line connected an electronic cash register. When he discovered there was no money inside it he just took the register and left.

Police found him about a block away. Officers recovered both the register and the knife.

The case is being treated as a theft, not a robbery.
