Police called to shooting and stabbing in Rush Neighborhood

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Lubbock police were called to the scene of a shooting at 2:08 p.m. Police say two men agreed to meet at Higinbothom Park near 18th and Utica Avenue to fight. During the fight one pulled out a knife and stabbed the other man several times. Police say the knife wound victim then pulled out a gun and shot the other man at least once.

Sgt. Jonathan Stewart with the police department says at that point the two men ran away from each other to get help. Both were taken to UMC.

"Doesn't look like either man is going to die at this point," said Sgt. Jonathon Stewart, Lubbock Police Department.

Stewart say the men were 32 and 36 years old, but because no arrests were made and no charges filed they are waiting to release the names.

Police think the men might have been fighting over a woman, but they're still investigating the reason they met to fight. Reports of a break in near the park turned out to be a misunderstanding.

Stewart says they had no connection to the Rush neighborhood, they appeared to have picked it at random. "Neither appear to know anybody here, or be from here. It just looks like it's one of those 'lets meet at the park and fight' type of things," said Stewart.
