UMC says 'one individual' under investigation

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

University Medical Center officials say they still cannot release certain information about allegations of embezzlement, but UMC General Counsel Lois Wischkaemper was able to tell KCBD NewsChannel 11 that UMC is not the target of a federal investigation. The investigation is focused on "one individual."

An email from UMC Wednesday morning regarding a KCBD NewsChannel 11 open records request says, "Once law enforcement informs us that we can release information pertinent to the ongoing investigation, we will do so. Our intent is to be fully transparent."

Vice President Greg Bruce resigned on Dec. 22 as the result of a routine internal audit. He has declined the chance to offer a comment. UMC has not said how much money is at stake, nor has UMC said how the money was taken.

UMC says there is no written audit report and there likely will not be one unless it is generated by the FBI or federal prosecutors. An internal review had just gotten started when Bruce resigned. "Federal officials took over the investigation at that point," UMC says.
