Councilman Victor Hernandez proposes allowing the sale of alcohol during the Fiestas Patrias event in the Buddy Holly Recreation Area at North University and Cesar Chavez Drive. City Council will take up the issue on Thursday.
Hernandez' proposal says in part, "The annual Fiestas Patrias festival draws participants from the Lubbock area, Austin, San Antonio, and New Mexico."
Hernandez' proposal also says, "Fiestas Patrias commemorates ... a community wide event encouraging Lubbock residents to embrace the Hispanic culture and participate in a traditional celebration."
The event is held on the weekend that best coincides with Mexican Independence Day, which is September 16th. Last year it was held at the Civic Center.
Alcohol is banned in City of Lubbock parks except for permits issued for the Wells Fargo Amphitheater, the American Museum of Agriculture, the Wind Power Center, and the Buddy and Maria Elena Holly Plaza.
