Police have identified the name of the homicide victim found near 46th and Locust Wednesday night. She has been identified as Stephanie Williams, 43.
Police say Ms. Williams does not appear to have been a resident of Lubbock and likely resided in the Dallas area.
Police say a passerby reported seeing the body just after 8:00 p.m. Wednesday. The body of Williams was located along the side of the Locust wrapped in a blood soaked sheet.
"It looks like she did have some injuries to her head, but again we're waiting on autopsy results to determine the exact cause of death and exact nature of what the injuries were," said Jonathan Stewart, Lubbock Police information officer.
Stewart says for hours they searched the industrial area where Williams' body was found.
Police also searched a Stripes gas station down the road on 50th Street and Avenue A where a trail of blood was found. Police now say that was not connected in anyway to this homicide investigation.
No suspects have been located at this time.
The South Plains Food Bank is less than a block away from the homicide. Brenda Hayes, the director of food bank operations, says they are concerned but the area is safe during the day. However at night they will take extra precautions.
"We take standard precautions we lock the door after everybody has left. The U.S. Food Service has a guard that keeps an eye on things. There is not a lot of traffic. I feel like it's safer in our parking lot than in the mall parking lot," said Hayes.
