Texas Tech adds Graduate Student Council

Provided by Texas Tech University

Graduate students at Texas Tech University now have a representative organization in their corner. Like the Student Government Association, which represents Texas Tech undergraduates, and the Texas Tech Law School's Bar Association, which represents professional students, graduate students now have the Graduate Student Advisory Council (GSAC).

"One of the main roles of the GSAC will be to provide representation of graduate students interests to the university administration," said Jacek Jonca-Jasinski, the graduate student life coordinator at Texas Tech.

He said the main focus of the representatives is to improve graduate student life. They also will work to achieve mutual support for graduate students and also focus on specific issues related to graduate students.

"The GSAC was formed in response to the growing number of graduate students, achieving Tier 1 status and plans to further increase graduate enrollment to 10,000 graduate students," Jonca-Jasinski said.

He said graduate and undergraduate students also often share some of the same concerns, and GSAC and SGA will work hand in hand to address those issues.

"There will be 20 elected representatives of the graduate student body and two SGA senators who all have voting power," he said. "We are considering allowing an additional seat for a Student Bar Association representative."
