Tax season is here and a group of community volunteers are offering free tax preparation assistance for low-income families.

It's called the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance - or VITA - program.

The Coalition of Community Assistance Volunteers held a training exercise Friday where volunteers prepared mock tax returns.

The volunteers have been trained by the Internal Revenue Service and will help make free income tax perpetration available to low income residents on the South Plains.

The service will be available through April 16 at 5601 S. Avenue Q.

You can find directions, details, and a schedule of hours when help is available at www.freetaxprep4u.org/freetaxprep.php.
