Tips to keep your heart healthy

Posted: Updated:

Since heart disease is the number one killer of men and women, and this is February…American Heart Month.  I want to share some great tips from a new book called "Mayo Clinic Healthy Heart for Life".

It tells us that we can quick start our health simply by remembering three things:  Eat five, Sleep eight, and Move ten.  So, rather than focusing on what you can't eat when trying to improve your health, the Mayo Clinic experts say focus on what you can do to live longer.

Eat five fruits and vegetables a day, Sleep eight hours or more a night, and move 10 means just ten minutes of moderate activity a day can have a huge impact on your heart health.

Dr. Martha Grogan, a cardiologist, said, "Some people say well, 10 minutes is nothing! but actually the studies show that when a person goes from being sedentary to walking even an hour a week -- the risk of dying from heart disease can decrease by as much as 50%"

Experts say even making a point to stand -- rather than sit -- as often as possible can help your heart.
