*The Road to Recovery Program provides a transportation option for cancer patients in active treatment. Whether at home or staying at Hope Lodge, many patients need assistance in getting to treatment. They may not have a caregiver, or their caregiver must work or is unable to drive - that is where our Road to Recovery drivers assist.
*Drivers volunteer their time and vehicles. Drivers must pass a Dept. of Motor Vehicles check, submit their license and liability information, and attend a training with the American Cancer Society.
*Trained drivers will receive a name badge, dashboard signage, and needed materials to and information to safely transport patients to and from active cancer treatment.
*Drivers may request reimbursement at .14 cents a mile, or apply the reimbursement to tax credits.
*Lubbock currently has 8 active drivers, and we could engage as many as 20 drivers to assist in getting patients to treatment.
*We have drivers in some outlying counties to assist patients, and can always use more. Due to the geographical greatness of our area, we are always seeking drivers who are willing to transport patients who live in outlying counties, as well as within the city limits.
*There are some days and weeks when we have 1 or 2 patients who need a ride for a weekly chemo treatment, and there are some days and weeks when we have 4 or 5 patients who need daily rides for radiation. It varies on need and we do our best to give a weeks notice to drivers.
*Your time, whether it is one day a month - or three times a week - could make the difference in a cancer patient receiving life-saving treatment - and is greatly needed in the Lubbock area. Please call 792-7128 for more information.
