A Texas Tech businessman has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation into possible wrongdoing.

Patrick Helton, director of the Northwest Texas International Trade Center, has come under heavy scrutiny after a story in the Dallas Morning News revealed a history of criminal behavior, including a bounced check for $38,000.

Helton's office promotes international trade and , over the past decade, the center has claimed credit for more than $400 million in business. His supervisor, Dr. Robert Sweazy, declined to comment on specifics of the investigation, and said that it would go on for, "as long as it takes."
