It's hard enough to imagine being pregnant at age 52, but Marianne Thoms just gave birth to twins at Covenant Hospital this weekend, and that's not even the biggest surprise in this baby announcement. Marianne gave birth to her grandchildren. Shawn and Traci Reed, the proud parents, couldn't be happier.
If you haven't figured it out yet, Marianne offered to be a surrogate for her daughter-in-law who was able to conceive but not carry a pregnancy to term. So, Marianne gave Shawn and Traci 31 weeks of her life to bring these two little people into theirs.
"I didn't want anyone else to carry my grand babies, and I knew that the things you're advised to do medically I knew I wouldn't while I was carrying them and that I would do the best I could to get two healthy children here," says the proud grandmother.
So, twin girls Sydney and Morgan are doing great, both a little over 3.5 pounds, which is great for twins born two months early. Marianne is still at Covenant recovering from a C-section delivery but she is expected to go home on Wednesday. The girls will stay in the NICU unit for a few weeks to build up some strength before they go home to Austin with their mom and dad.
