A new program for doctors to test their compassion

Posted: Updated:

Have you ever left the doctor's office feeling confused like the doctor rushed you and didn't really listen to your concerns?  At the University of South Florida, they're trying something new. In a new program there called "Select", you don't just need to pass the M-CAT to show you're smart enough to get into medical school.  You need to pass an emotional intelligence test to show your compassion is strong enough.

Dr. Alicia Monroe said, "Medicine is a profession that has a social contract. We have a commitment to care about individual patients."

Dr. Monroe says the heart of the program is making sure doctors have a heart. There's a strong emphasis on teaching the students to see things from a patient's perspective to get to know them, and learn how their job, family, and social life will all be affected by the decisions a doctor makes about their health care.
