A blanket of snow and ice covered the South Plains on Sunday, leaving the roadways an icy hazard for drivers.
Lubbock Police Department reported more than 200 accidents between 7a.m. and 10 p.m. During the afternoon accidents slowed down as the roadways turned to slush, but with temperatures never reaching above freezing those roadways quickly turned into thick sheets of ice.
Since 9a.m. city workers and TXDOT drivers have been working in 12 hour shifts plowing and salting bridges, overpasses and major intersections. Even with the roads being treated, law enforcement agencies are strongly urging people to stay in and avoid traveling.
DPS is also urging drivers to stay away from Highway 84 between Lubbock and Post. John Gonzalez with DPS says there have been numerous accidents on 84, and drivers should find an alternate route.
These icy roads are expected to continue Monday morning and several area schools, daycares, and businesses are delayed.
