Concerns about lipstick containing various amounts of lead

Posted: Updated:

It's common for women to worry about getting lipstick on our teeth.  However, there are health advocacy groups that suggest we are faced with a much bigger concern than that.

First, the bad news, then I will explain something.

A new report released by the Food and Drug Administration suggests that more than 400 types of lipstick contain various amounts of lead.  On that list, L'Oreal had five of the top ten highest levels, along with a pricey brand called Nars, but indicating price was not a factor.

Several consumer groups, including the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, are up in arms now.   They're saying the FDA needs to do something about that.  Spokesperson from Campaign for Safe Cosmetics Stacy Malkan said, "They've spent the past five years looking at what are the levels of lead in lipstick, but they haven't done any kind of health impact study to look at what are the exposures women are getting from lipstick."

Here's what you need to know before you worry about what lipstick you buy, and how it falls on the list.  If you put this in perspective, you'll understand how little lead we're talking about.  According to the Consumer Product Safety Improvement act, children's products in the United States can't contain more than 100 parts were million of lead.

The lipstick reported with the most lead contained 8 parts per million. That is why FDA health officials insist lipstick does not pose a safety hazard.
