CDC reports outbreaks of norovirus

Posted: Updated:

It isn't just the flu we worry about this time of year. This is the peak season for norovirus, which is basically a nasty stomach bug that brings severe vomiting and diarrhea.

The CDC says they are seeing outbreaks here and there all over the country. At one school in Minnesota yesterday, 200 kids were sick at home with norovirus.

Dr. Aaron Hall said, "We certainly have seen a lot of outbreaks being reported, but our best assessment of the magnitude of the season will come after it's been completed."

Since norovirus is usually a one day bug and doesn't have to be reported, it's hard to know how big a problem it is.

The Lubbock Health Department tells me city schools are reporting more cases of norovirus right now, compared to flu.   Parents are asked to remind kids about frequent hand washing because norovirus is easily passed from one hand to another.
