FDA allows cancer drugs to enter the market again in March

Posted: Updated:

Two cancer drugs have been in short supply after the main manufacturer was shut down recently due to safety concerns.  Now, the FDA says the drugs, Methotrexate and Doxil, will soon be available again.

Doxil is needed to treat ovarian cancer and other deadly tumors. The injectable form of Methotrexate is used to treat kids with leukemia and bone cancer. The FDA says thousands of Methotrexate vials went out to hospitals nationwide today.  It is working hard to find a way to alleviate the Doxil shortage, but that still leaves many parents feeling hopeless while they wait.

Mother of six year old cancer patient, Sara Stuckey, stated, "It's hard enough to hear your child has cancer, but to hear the treatment that was successfully working is suddenly not available, is devastating."

Dr. Margaret Hamburg said, "The FDA has been actively and aggressively working with industry to ensure the treatments and therapies always get into the hands of people who need them, when they need them."

Today, the FDA approved a generic version of Methotrexate for kids to use, which will be available here in March.
