LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech sophomore right-handed pitcher Duke von Schamann pitched seven shutout innings to lead Texas Tech to a 4-1 victory over No. 18 St. John's on Friday night in the first game of the third-annual Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.

Texas Tech (4-1) held a shutout into the ninth inning against St. John's (1-3) who dropped its third game of the season.

Holding a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh, junior Barrett Barnes hit a fly ball of the top of the center-field wall that would end up being his 26th career home run, and his first career inside-the-park homer while providing Tech a 4-0 lead.

Despite the first four Red Storm batters reaching base in the top of the ninth and one run scoring, Tech All-American reliever John Neely retired three consecutive batters, two via strikeout, to end the game with the bases loaded.

von Schamann (2-0) allowed only three base hits in his second shutout outing of the season. He struck out five batters without allowing a walk in the game. Reliever Trey Masek pitched one inning while allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout and a walk.

St. John's starting pitcher Kyle Hansen (0-2) took the loss in a six-inning performance allowing one run (unearned) on four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks allowed.

Texas Tech scored in the first inning for the fifth consecutive game while third-baseman Reid Redman (2-for-4, RBI) drove in Jamodrick McGruder with an infield single to third base. McGruder led off the game with a walk and then advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt by Hansen.

Seven Tech players tallied base hits, but Redman was the only player in the game with a multi-hit game.

Texas Tech will continue play at the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic on Saturday, Feb. 25 with a 5 p.m. matchup with Northern Illinois. The Huskies (0-3) will play the early game on Saturday against St. John's at 1 p.m. at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
