Lubbock's 'Unsung Heroes' recognized at annual ceremony

Posted: Updated:

They save lives and serve our community every day, but sometimes the services of police, firemen and EMS personnel are taken for granted.  So to recognize what they do for us, the Metropolitan Lubbock Rotary Club and American State Bank co-hosted the annual Unsung Heroes Award Recognition Ceremony Thursday night at the American State Bank conference center.

This year's recipients of the Unsung Heroes Awards include Sgt. Jack Mitchell III,  Lubbock Sheriff's Office; Lt. Gordon Haynes , Lubbock Fire Department ; Asst. Shift Chief Brian Payne,  University Medical Center EMS; and Officer Zack Johnson, Lubbock Police Department. Each individual was selected by their peers in their respective organizations.

This is the ninth year for the event. The idea to host it came after the horrific events of 9-11 and the heroic actions of the first responders in New York City.
