LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

The families of Jessica Hernandez and Rudy Vela can finally start to pick up the pieces after Monday's verdict. Ruben Garcia was convicted of capital murder in the stabbing deaths of the two victims.

Emotions were running high throughout the courtroom as the jury announced their verdict. Tears were flowing and a sense of relief was apparent. Most agreed the outcome was bittersweet. Family friend Ronnie Ramirez was clearly emotional after the verdict was announced. He says this day will never go away.

"We love them and miss them and we'll never forget… This should have never happened. Ramirez said.

Martin Garza was a cousin of Rudy Vela, and his mother Rachel was also involved in the stabbing. She was the only one to survive her attack. He says his mom has bad dreams every night about the stabbing.

"My mom is going to relive this everyday of her life," Garza said.

The outcome overwhelmed Rudy Vela's 11-year old daughter Jazllyn Vela.

"I'm happy. I'm going to have a celebration at my house. It's going to be a great day.

Her grandmother Ruby Simmons said Garcia took so much away from Jazllyn. However, she's thankful to the prosecution and the jury and she believes justice was served.

"He won't see her graduate. He won't be able to walk her down the aisle… He loved her very much" Simmons said.

Both families say they are ready to move on with their lives and hope that this brings closure. Ruben Garcia was convicted of capital murder and was given a life sentence without the possibility of parole. He does have the opportunity to appeal the case, but the prosecution believes they have built such a strong case that he will be unsuccessful in doing so.
