Lubbock Authorities Suspicious of 17-Month-Old's Death

Tuesday a mother called 911 when her 17-month-old son stopped breathing, Wednesday the child died.

The baby was taken off life support and pronounced dead around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at Covenant Medical Center. Investigators on this case told NewsChannel 11 they have reason to believe the baby died at the hands of someone, but they're not sure whether the mother is at fault or possibly 27-year-old Armando Lomas. Lomas was at the home when the baby stopped breathing.

Tuesday morning, the mother called 911 to report that 17-month-old Espiridion Garcia was not breathing. Aerocare flew Espiridion to Covenant were he was put on life support.

Investigators say they have high suspicion someone is to blame. "We've just seen some indicators throughout this past 24 hours that's made us suspicions," said Cpt. Bill Drewell, Lubbock Co. Sheriff's Dept.

Children's Protective Services has taken the mother's two young daughters away, and say they have dealt with this family before, specifically for child neglect back in 2001.

Lomas, the mother's boyfriend, was arrested yesterday for outstanding traffic tickets. However, at this point, no one has been arrested for the death of Espiridion Garcia.

Investigators are expecting the baby's autopsy report sometime on Thursday.
