First steps made in downtown revitalization

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

The historic Pioneer Hotel revealed its new facelift to the public Tuesday. The renovations are part of the city's downtown revitalization plan. McDougal Companies is spearheading the project.

"It's hard to revitalize downtown if buildings are left vacant," Mike McDougal said.

The revitalization is something that has been talked about for years. Now McDougal says it's finally becoming a reality.

Over 200 people gathered Tuesday morning to celebrate the project. McDougal Companies bought the property in 2005 and has developed it as a key part of the downtown renovation. When completed, the Pioneer will house luxury condos, shops, office spaces and restaurants.

"This is the first time we've actually let the public into the building. We have had a lot of interest over the years," McDougal said.

The entire downtown revitalization project is expected to take 10 to 15 years. The Pioneer isn't the only project in the works at the moment. McDougal Companies is working on several other projects related to downtown.

City Councilman Victor Hernandez is excited about the development.

"Downtown revitalization is something that has been attempted for many years - some would say even decades. It's nice to see it's finally coming together. This facility is just one piece of the puzzle," Hernandez said.

Although most of the projects are being completed by companies like McDougal, the city also has a hand in the revitalization. They are currently working on phase one of a plan to move all utilities underground. This would include power and cable lines.
