This is great news if you're one of the millions of women who have been advised to take Boniva to maintain bone strength and help prevent osteoporosis.
If you take it, you know it's more than a hundred dollars for just one pill a month, but today, the FDA approved the first generic version of the drug. The generic name for Boniva is Ibandronate. It's in a class of medications proven to help increase bone mass and reduce the chance of a spinal fracture.
The National Osteoporosis Foundation estimates 10 million Americans over age 50 are faced with that problem. The hope is that more will take advantage of medication to prevent osteoporosis now that a cheaper generic version is on the way to local pharmacies.
