ABC Rodeo celebrates 70th anniversary

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

The ABC Rodeo Pro Rodeo is celebrating their 70th anniversary this year.

The event is sponsored by the downtown chapter of the American Business Clubs.

AMBUCS started the rodeo in Lubbock 70 years ago to benefit the then Boys Club of Lubbock and the proceeds have benefited the Boys and Girls Clubs of Lubbock ever since.

Rodeo Chairwoman, Leslie Cox says this is a huge milestone.

"70 years has got to prove something. 70 years ago the ABC Rodeo was started with the sole purpose to fund the Boys and Girls Clubs," Cox said.

AMBUCS has raised over a million dollars for the cause since the rodeo started and are currently working towards the two million dollar mark.

The ABC Pro Rodeo has over 300 competitors this year. 64 of those contestants are bull riders, working to gain points and prize money towards the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

The rodeo will host numerous events, including bull riding, bareback, steer wrestling, saddle bronk, barrel racing and even Mexican bull fighting.

"We've got the West Texas Chevy bullfight and it's fun. Everybody loves that and watching to see if someone gets hurt," Cox said.

Tuesday night's event is called Mutton Bustin'. Children ages 4-7 will have the opportunity to ride sheep and compete like real bull riders. The top competitors will be able to compete Saturday night in the rodeo for a belt buckle and vest.

You can purchase tickets at various western stores around Lubbock or at selectaseat.com.
