The stuff that gives jalapeno, habanero, and chili peppers their heat can also help your heart! It's been suspected for some time, but now, researchers in Hong Kong say they've discovered that hot compound in peppers, called capsaicin, was the key to reducing cholesterol levels in hamsters. Even better, they say capsaicin was able to block a gene that constricts and narrows blood vessels, which lead to heart attack and stroke. That doesn't mean you need to medicate yourself with mega peppers, but researchers say if you like it hot…go for it.
