Suspect in custody after 2-hour bank standoff

A hostage situation at City Bank in South Lubbock ended peacefully on Wednesday as police took a suspect into custody after a two-hour standoff.

Lubbock police responded to what appeared to be a bank robbery in progress at City Bank at Kingsgate South, 82nd & Quaker around 3:30 p.m. A SWAT team was called out and the area was blocked off to traffic.

Police say a man armed with a handgun entered the bank and took a female employee hostage. Shortly after, someone called 911. Police say an off-duty officer was the first on the scene.

After negotiations, the hostage was released and the bank was evacuated. Police say everyone but the suspect was removed from the building.

Businesses were evacuated or locked down while this was happened. Police negotiators were on the phone with an armed suspect in a back room for over an hour before officers entered the bank and took him into custody.

Lubbock police have identified the man as Tommy Ray Beadles, 61. They say Beadles has been charged with one count of Aggravated Kidnapping, a first degree felony.

He is currently being held in the Lubbock Police Department holding facility. No bond has been set at this time.

Beadles's wife, Jaynel, told KCBD her husband is bi-polar. She says they are customers at City Bank, but do not go to the 82nd location. She thinks this was all a call for help.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and no other details available for release at this time.

A press conference is planned for 2 p.m. Thursday.

City Bank will re-open Thursday.
