Feelings of stress can make symptoms of the common cold last longer. A new study out of Carnegie Mellon University finds stress leads to the overproduction of the hormone Cortisol, which increases the inflammatory response in the body. When a person is exposed to a cold virus, and also feeling stressed, the increased inflammatory response causes persistent cold symptoms. Doctors say this adds to the evidence that rest is needed to overcome a cold.
