Nine physician specialty groups have released a list of commonly used tests and treatments that they say most patients don't really need. The list is part of a new campaign called Choosing Wisely is designed to empower patients and lower healthcare costs. According to the list, most patients don't need chest X-Rays before surgery, or MRI's for back pain. They groups also contend that antibiotics should not be used to treat sinus infections in most cases, and EKGs are not necessary during a routine physical. Instead of blaming the doctor, experts say unnecessary tests are often the result of patient demand.
