Smyer kindergarten student left behind during field trip

Posted: Updated:

A Smyer elementary kindergarten student was left behind during a field trip on Tuesday. The kindergarten class visited the Civic Center to watch a play.  They ate lunch at Maxey Park before they headed back to school.

A teacher, two aides and at least one parent supervised the trip. Smyer ISD Superintendent, Dane Kerns, said a head count was given before the students boarded the bus. However, when they returned to Smyer, they realized one student was missing.

An employee at Lubbock Diagnostic Radiology spotted the boy and noticed he was without an adult.  He stayed at their office until a Smyer ISD teacher came to pick him up.

Principal Jeff brazil says he spoke with school faculty today, to ensure an event like this will not happen again.  "We just wanted to make sure that we have a system in place," said Brazil, "to where we can hopefully eliminate this from the future."

Brazil said there could have been some confusion among chaperones, since parents are permitted to pick up their children from field trips, when cleared with school officials.  He added, "having at least more than one person count," said Brazil, "that would probably help, also."
