Employees Picket SBC

About 40 Lubbock employees of Southwestern Bell Communications used their lunch time today to picket the company. The workers are protesting a new contract they say includes increased healthcare co-pays and no wage increases.

"We're in contract negotiations, our contract expires at Midnight on Saturday. We have not been able to get the company to talk seriously. There have been major setbacks in our healthcare and cuts in all areas" stated Jack Maxey, union representative.

Pickets took place today in five states SBC operates in. If contract negotiations fall through, employees will give a 30 day notice before they intend to strike and will negotiate up until the end of the notice. Union representatives say a strike is a last resort.
