48 people in the Lubbock area were applauded on Tuesday for their generosity. They are the regular donors who give blood at United Blood Services. That group of 48 may give blood up to six times in a year to help a community of 200,000 people. That was the message from Les Long at UBS who adds there is good and bad news when you look at our local blood supply.
"We're running behind on donors, but also, the hospitals keep coming up with new ways to use blood products to save lives, which is great if your loved one is in the hospital, but it's not great if we don't have enough blood to supply to the hospitals," says Les Long.
So, Les says he's looking for more life-saving heroes because anyone over age 18, who is in good health, can share blood products that could save the life of one of your neighbors or a family member in an emergency.
If you'd like to answer the call and be a blood donor, UBS is located at 2523 48th St. The center has early morning and late evening hours to make donating blood more convenient.
Walk-ins are welcome, but if you call UBS to make an appointment, it'll go faster with them expecting you. Just call (806) 741-1752.
