Common Tax Mistakes to Avoid

Taxes are due Thursday, April 15th, so accountants at H&R Block were busy Wednesday helping those last minute tax filers. And they warn it's easy to make common mistakes when you're trying to get the return filed quickly.

2004 Tax Guide
Find tax help for new filers, tax law changes, a checklist of common errors, and information on electronic tax filing. You'll find it all here in our special Tax Help Section.

Go over your tax return and check the following:

  • Make sure you've filled in your social security number.
  • Make sure the writing is legible. Make sure you've signed and dated the return.
  • If you file a joint return, both you and your spouse must sign and date it.

The US Postal Service is offering some relief to those last minute filers.

  • The Monterey Station at 5014 Gary will be open until 10 pm Thursday night.
  • Tax volunteers will be available to help you with your returns from 4 pm until 9 pm.
  • You can drop off your return at the general mail facility at 1515 Ave G until midnight. If you drop it off there by midnight, it will be postmarked April 15th.
