April has been designated National Donate Life Month. Tommy Thompson, Secretary of Health and Human Services says it's time we talk about the gift of life by deciding to become organ, tissue, marrow or blood donors.
The timing is appropriate for our local blood supply since United Blood Services says the amount of blood on the shelves now is already about 125 units short of filling the normal demand for area hospitals. So, if you can fit it in your schedule next week to roll up your sleeve for a while the folks at UBS would be grateful to see you.
Donors need to be at least 17-years-old, in good health and weigh at least 110 pounds.
You can always stop by UBS at 48th and University without an appointment but if you'll call first, they'll be expecting you and it'll go much faster. The number is (806) 741-1752 to set an appointment.
