LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - This week KCBD NewsChannel 11 honors City of Lubbock Battalion Chief Shaun Fogerson. As a former marine, camaraderie and team work are characteristics that are simply ingrained in him.
"There was always something to do," Fogerson said. "We were always right there to help each other out."
Fogerson was a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. He worked as a diesel mechanic and was called to Desert Storm in 1990. He served the United States in several countries overseas, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq.
Despite constant chaos and turmoil, Fogerson said he always found a way to focus on his given task.
"It's hard, but eventually, your body just levels off. It can only be excited for so long before you finally reach a happy medium and you're able to perform the best you can at that moment," Fogerson said.
He said it was his team that helped him work through the night during times of distress. Fogerson continues to maintain that friendship with his former team. He and his fellow soldiers still keep in contact to this day. Fogerson has a similar, supportive relationship with his Lubbock City Fire Department team.
As Battalion Chief, Fogerson says that although both professions are demanding, they are both extremely rewarding. "In both professions," said Fogerson, "lives are on the line."
Fogerson says that both professions are jobs he dreamed of doing.
"When I was a little boy," said Fogerson, "there were always two things I wanted to be. I wanted be a marine and a fireman. I was fortunate to become both."
