DPS trooper has vehicle stolen after stopping to render aid

CISCO, TX (KCBD) -

A DPS trooper had his vehicle stolen when he stopped to render emergency first aid on Thursday.

The statement from the Texas Department of Public Safety says a man flagged the trooper down on Interstate 20 and told him his wife was having a heart attack. The trooper called for an ambulance, which determined that the woman was not actually having a heart attack.

Troopers felt the man, Chris Eugene Durham, was acting strangely and got consent to search the vehicle. They found drugs and took him into custody.

The DPS statement says: "Durham slipped out of the handcuffs and began to fight the officers. Durham jumped into the DPS unit and attempted to drive away. The trooper and deputy shot the tires of the patrol car. Durham traveled westbound on Interstate 20 and wrecked out at mile post 228, just west of Cisco, Texas. Officers arrived and Durham was taken to the Eastland County Jail. Durham continued to resist arrest all the way to the Eastland County Jail. Charges are pending."
