A drug commonly used to treat HIV may soon be used to prevent the disease as well. An FDA advisory panel is meeting today to discuss whether Truvada should be approved for healthy patients who are at a high risk of contracting HIV through sexual intercourse. If approved, this would be the first drug designated for the prevention of HIV and AIDS. Earlier this week, the agency backed data showing Truvada cut the risk of infection by 44-percent in gay or bisexual men and by 75-percent in heterosexual couples where one person was HIV positive. However, experts stressed that Truvada was only effective if it was taken every day. The FDA usually follows the recommendations of its panels.
