LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Texas Tech officials are investigating an assault on campus over the weekend involving a football player.

Athletic spokesperson Blayne Beal confirms that junior defensive end Leon Mackey was involved in a fight at the Student Recreation Center Saturday. He says the football staff is in the process of gathering the facts.

KCBD contacted the Texas Tech Police Department to obtain a police report. Police Chief Ron Seacrist referred us to TTU spokesperson Chris Cook. Cook tells KCBD that Texas Tech Police Officers responded to an assault 5:41 p.m. at the Rec Center on Saturday. He says the report indicates two male students got into a fight and one male struck the other in the face. One of them was taken to University Medical Center.

Tech would not tell us the name of the person in the hospital or his condition. At this point, Cook says, the full police report will not be released until the investigation is complete.

Mackey is expected to play a significant role on the 2012-2013 football team.
